Mozart's Bottom

Sadly my mother-in-law died recently. We
miss her very much.

We have inherited some of
the family treasures including this piano stool. It holds a lot of memories, not least those of my husband's sit-upon! He spent many, many child-hood and teenage hours perched thereon, gradually turning himself into the musician he is today.

Methinks this heirloom deserves some very special treatment so I have embarked on a needlepoint project, entitled 'Mozart's Bottom', to create a new seat cover.
I have chosen one of Beth Russell's delicious Strawberry Thief kits. There it was waiting for me at Liberty! It was exactly the right size, blends in well with our sitting room and, best of all, was inspired by William Morris.

I have even made a bag to protect the canvas when I'm not working on it. I just love that yummy Kaffee Fassett Geranium fabric.

Abundance

Down at the allotment the
strawberries and broad beans may be on the wane but there are such riches still to come.

We're not keen on cabbages and weren't sure why we had planted some. Imagine how delighted we were when they emerged looking like this!

This fabulous bloom is full of Halloween promise. We like pumpkins for decoration rather than eating.

I love to sit on my little stone bench, in the sunshine, looking at this heartwarming view:

and then there is the pleasure of slipping next-door-but-one to my daughter-in-law's plot to admire her superlative strawberries.

Play ball with me again, please!

Not now Biffer, even though you are the best dog in the world!

First rose

We like nothing better than a rose or two to enhance our dinner table.

With this in mind we planted a border of hybrid tea roses in the allotment; seven plants in all.

This is our very first bloom.

Jellyroll and Jam

Today I went on an awesome course to learn how to turn this jellyroll into a 48" X 70" quilt.

Now I have to finish the top layer before the 4th of September because that's when I go back to be shown how to do the quilting!

With a great deal of luck and a prevailing wind, I hope to post a picture of the finished article before Autumn is out
.

And now to the jam!

Yesterday I brought home over 5 lbs of strawberries from the allotment. I pondered what to do with them for a minute or two, but there was really no contest. It had to be jam. I love strawberry jam.

I sprinkled the strawberries with sugar before I went to bed. Delia assures me that steeping them in sugar overnight is the way to keep strawberries whole in jam.

No time first thing so the jam had to be made this evening, fatigue or no fatigue. I poured myself a stiff drink, dissolved the sugar, added the juice of t
wo lemons and turned up the flame!

When was Delia ever wrong?

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is an adorable cat.

He's getting on a bit now - about fifteen years old if the RSPCA got it right when we adopted him.

Why 'Pumpkin'? Well, he's big, round and orange, and moved in at Halloween. On 31st October 1997 to be precise.

He can still be very kittenish, particularly when he is appealing for more food (often).

When he came to us he was pretty much a silent cat, but now he talks to us all the time. He shouts for more tuck, he says 'Hello' when he comes in from the great outside and notifies us if he has been rained on.

A year or so ago we acquired an arbour. We call it 'Pumpkin's Shelter' because it immediately became his most favourite place for taking in rays or observing. It protects him on three sides, keeps him dry whilst providing a good view of his territory and files his nails nicely.

Inside our house we have three beds and one futon, and all these are primarily Pumpkin's. During the night he tries to take over my pillow. There aren't many mornings when I don't wake up wearing a ginger hat.

Pumpkin has his own armchair and his own seat at the dining table. He likes to join us at meal times in anticipation of a tasty morsel or two. "Meat, fish, cheese, meusli or yoghurt will do nicely, thank you. I'm not a fussy cat." !!

It was years before Pumpkin would sit on a lap. I'm so pleased he eventually decided it was a good thing.

Encore le camping!

We've replaced our canvas frame tent (which took us all over Europe, in comfort, for 25 years) with an Outwell Bear Lake 4! We love it and can't wait to take it to places more exotic than the back garden. It has a zipped-in ground sheet and a fitted carpet. The two-bedrooms-made-into-one is plenty big enough for our Queen-sized, double-height inflatable bed and our wardrobe. Bring on the pink wine! Bring on the cicadas! Vive le camping!

Summer Harvest

Our first Summer pickings!

When we sowed the seeds and planted the plants we doubted. And then .............!

Basket of Scraps

My blog is a scrap-book and diary about my passions.

I am passionate about needlepoint, patchwork & quilting, food & wine, my allotment, my travels, my tent, waterscapes, landscapes, miracles of nature, dolls houses, William Morris, books, more books, wood, wool and many other things (not to mention my family, my cat, my friends and my home).

NB: A 'Basket of Scraps' is a patchwork block.
